◉ Application
The seawater intake pipeline is a critical component in a desalination plant as it brings seawater into the system. Due to the high salinity, mineral content, and biological materials present in seawater, traditional metal pipes are susceptible to rapid corrosion, leading to increased maintenance costs. GRE pipes, however, offer a solution to these challenges due to their superior corrosion resistance.
· Corrosion Resistance: GRE pipes can withstand the corrosive effects of seawater over long periods, ensuring the safe and efficient transportation of seawater
into the desalination system.
· High-Pressure Endurance: Seawater intake systems often operate under significant pressure, especially in areas with deep-sea intakes. GRE pipes can handle
these high-pressure conditions, ensuring the stability and reliability of the intake system.
2. Reverse Osmosis System Pipelines
Seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) is the most common desalination technology, where seawater is pressurized and forced through semi-permeable membranes to remove salt and other impurities. The high-pressure nature of this process requires pipelines that can handle significant internal pressure and resist corrosion from the seawater.
· Pressure Resistance: GRE pipes are able to withstand the high pressures involved in the reverse osmosis process, typically between 60-80 bar (6000-8000 kPa),
ensuring smooth operation of the desalination system.
· Corrosion Resistance: As reverse osmosis involves highly saline water, GRE pipes' corrosion resistance ensures that they will not deteriorate from exposure to
saline solutions, thus maintaining the integrity of the system over time.
3. Brine Disposal Pipelines
One of the by-products of seawater desalination is brine, a concentrated saline solution. The disposal of brine back into the ocean requires dedicated pipelines that must endure the corrosive nature of the saline solution. If metal pipes were used, they would quickly corrode due to the high salt concentration in the brine.
· Corrosion Resistance: GRE pipes are resistant to corrosion even in highly concentrated saltwater, making them ideal for the disposal of brine without
the risk of material degradation.
· Low Maintenance: GRE pipes' durability reduces the need for frequent maintenance and replacements, leading to lower operational costs in the long term.
4. Freshwater Distribution Pipelines
After desalination, the freshwater produced must be stored and distributed to the end-users. Freshwater distribution systems often operate under high pressures, and the pipelines need to be resistant to wear, contamination, and environmental conditions.
· Non-Contaminating: Unlike metal pipes, GRE pipes do not leach metal ions into the water, ensuring that the quality of the freshwater is not compromised by the material of the pipe.
· Pressure Resistance: GRE pipes can handle the high pressures that are typically found in freshwater distribution systems, ensuring that water is delivered efficiently without any leaks or failures.
